Can you imagine being transported into a fairy tale? That’s what being in Colmar feels like.
Colmar is a French town in Alsace. The town is situated on the Alsatian Wine Route and it is considered to be the capital of Alsatian wine. Colmar’s architectural landmarks reflect the French and German styles. The town was spared from the destructions of the French Revolution and the Great World Wars, and still today it is renowned among the French population for its amazing cityscape. The canals of the river Lauch cross the city in an area that’s called Little Venice, which is considered one of the most enjoyable areas in which to walk, because of the colorful buildings that coast the river. Moreover, Colmar’s Christmas markets rank second in the classification of the European Best Christmas Markets. And guess when I visited the town? During Christmas time.
Being there was magical. I felt transported into a movie set in which houses were made of gingerbread and the Christmas atmosphere permeated the whole town. Everyone there smiled, each and every house was decorated, and the six Christmas markets created a welcoming and warm environment for tourists.
First of all, I want to tell you how we ended up in Colmar. Two of my friends from uni and I always travel for Thanksgiving, and this year we wanted to visit Budapest. However, one of my friends came to school one day and presented Colmar to us, after she had found a picture of an influencer on Instagram. We saw the pictures of the town and two hours later we had already booked our whole trip.
During my four-day stay in Colmar, I had the chance to visit the whole town in depth. As soon as we arrived we went for a walk around, since we were still amazed by the surroundings. It was unbelievable, each and every building had a Christmas decoration.
I visited the Hansi Museum, which takes the name after the famous artist Jean-Jacques Waltz, whose paintings allow you to dive into the Colmar he used to live in. The museum is located on the first floor of the building, while the ground floor is a big store that sold both traditional foods and souvenirs.
One morning we had breakfast in one of the most famous places for croissants, “Au Croissant Dore”. Croissants are made every morning from this old lady who owns the place, and I assure you, they were amazing.
The town of Colmar hosts six different Chrismas markets, each in a different square, but all easy to reach by foot. Most of the shops sold products such as biscuits or Christmas decorations made by the locals.
As part of our stay, me and my friends improvised numerous photo shoots in all of the nicest spots. My phone is still filled in hundreds of pictures from that trip.
Last but not least, one of the places that was definitely worth visiting was Little Venice, the area by the canals of river Lauch. We took a trip on the boats across the river and it was beautiful to pass next to all of the amazingly colorful little houses.
Being Colmar situated in the wine region, you must try some wine in one of the numerous wine cellars of the area. The wine was fantastic. One of the must-haves from that area is the “vin chaud”, mulled wine. Delicious.

So I guess this is all for my diary entry on Colmar. Hope you enjoyed. Share your thoughts with me in the comment section below.
